MAKEEN Energy supports the UN Global Compact

In January 2018, we made a proper and profound promise to ourselves and our surroundings when we committed to support the UN Global Compact. This initiative by the United Nations mobilises businesses and organisations across the world to work for positive change in terms of human rights, labour, environment and anti-corruption. More specifically, it outlines ten principles for corporate sustainability that aim at building and upholding a culture of integrity and responsibility for the good of our planet and its people.

With its scope and reach, the UN Global Compact is regarded as the world's largest corporate sustainability initiative. And as one of the steps on our sustainability journey, MAKEEN Energy is taking an active part in turning the ideas, visions and goals into reality.

As our organisation is spread across continents, the same goes for our initiatives. We know that it takes a dedicated effort to spread the actions and involve people in all wings of our house. By supporting the UN Global Compact, we have a good tool that on the one hand ensures to keep sustainability on our minds and on the other hand helps identify areas where we can do better. In a big house of energy like ours, there are still many opportunities to improve or change - our sustainability journey has just begun.

Sustainable Ocean Principles

As one of the first companies in the world, MAKEEN Energy signed the Sustainable Ocean Principles in October 2019. This United Nations initiative builds upon and supplements the UN Global Compact, and it recognises the urgency and global importance of a healthy ocean.

As a signatory, MAKEEN Energy will take action to promote the well-being of the ocean for current and future generations. We are convinced that we can take part in making a difference, and especially our solutions for liquefied natural gas (LNG) as well as our plastic conversion facility (known by the name Plaston) have great potential for having a positive impact.

To focus our efforts, we have chosen to work dedicatedly with particularly 2 of the initiative's 9 principles. Specifically, we will dedicate our attention to principles 2 and 3 that both address the issue of ocean health and productivity. Whereas principle 2 is about promoting or contributing to restoring, protecting or maintaining a healthy ocean, principle 3 pays attention to preventing pollution and reducing greenhouse gas emissions that can affect the ocean.

Responsible energy solutions on a sustainability journey

As a participant in the UN Global Compact, we are committed to follow the initiative's principles - within human rights, labour, environment and anti-corruption - as a part of our sustainability journey. This is our annual status report from January 2020.
